Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-serving monarch, dies at the age of 96

On Thursday, Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-serving monarch in British history, died at the age of 96. Buckingham Palace announced her death in a statement. In addition, it also announced 10 days of national mourning. Buckingham Palace said, “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon”. The palace further added, “The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow”.

The eldest of the Queen’s four children, Charles, Prince of Wales, is the oldest heir apparent in British history. He, 73, will become king immediately. The queen’s death came after the palace announced doctors’ concern for her health and recommended she stayed under medical supervision. A day before her death, the 96-year-old monarch canceled a meeting of her Privy Council. Two days earlier, the queen appointed Liz Truss as the 15th prime minister of her reign.

Since last October, Queen Elizabeth II faced health problems that left her with difficulties walking and standing. British Prime Minister Liz Truss said, “the whole country will be deeply concerned by the news from Buckingham Palace this lunchtime”.

Britain’s new king, Charles, also released a statement on Thursday after the death of his mother. The statement said, “The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family”. The statement further read, “We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms, and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world”.

Queen Elizabeth II held the throne for 70 years before her death, the longest to ever do so. She was just 25 when her father died and she became Queen Elizabeth II on February 6, 1952.
