The algorithm- based timeline that was introduced by Twitter in 2016 was highly criticized by users as it showed tweets that Twitter considered might be interesting for the user that many a times being time- sensitive lost their relevance.  It also led to missing out on some significant posts of people that the user follows.

To overcome the issue, Twitter is working on a new button that will allow the user to switch between the algorithm and chronological timelines. The button will be located on the top right corner of the website’s homescreen. The button will enable the users to choose between a display of Latest Tweets (chronological) and Top Tweets (algorithm- based).

Currently, the test is live for a subset of iOS users and Twitter employees only. According to a statement provided by twitter, the test will be available in the coming weeks.

In addition to the timeline switcher, a Floating Action Button in the iOS version of the Twitter app that functions to open ‘Tweet Compose Box’ has also been added by Twitter.
